Updates

Who are followers?

Who are these people you see behind a pretty meaningless number in a cirle when you enter the stats of your WP page? Sometimes you just wonder who they are and why they decided to follow your blog, yours out of so many others blogs that can be found on the web. I’ve been wondering for long and I finally made up my mind.

This, guys, is just a little update to tell you what I did just in case I might have done some unintentional harm by my doings.

Just a few minutes ago I went through my followers list and removed all the people who I have never heard from, not through likes, not through comments or they just left a like or a few on posts I suppose they have never read. I genuinely don’t like people who follow me just for a follow-back. I never follow back anyway. I only follow when I am sure I caught up with what the blog had to offer and in that I will be reading the blog and its future updates. I do not follow the blogs I know I won’t be reading. I expect the same from everyone else. My motives are clear, I think. I will tell you now what followers are to me.

On the TS3 official site there is a my page and there you have “my friends”. When I first started using the site, I collected these friends, but then I realized I wanted them to really be my friends, for them to go along with the name the site has given them. Because some of these people were not even acquaintances, but just strangers in every sense of this word, because on the internet not everyone is a complete stranger. But they were to me. And hence I cleared off my friendslist and I only have people there who I want to keep a relationship with. I am not about the numbers, but about the connection.

Now, followers to me are what friends are. They are people who communicate with me and if they are shy, they leave likes and/or occasional comments. People who are obviously interested in other things than I am and who follow my blog just to follow and never really explore it are not friends. They are strangers. And hence why I have just gone through my followers and removed the people that obviously had no intention to try and develop a friendship with me. And if you are my friend,  you are most certainly still there. If you discover you were removed and want to be friends with me, please refollow. It is a fair chance I removed someone who I didn’t mean to and for that I am sorry. And this is just an explanation in case you discover this at one point.

For the record, my followers count went from 80 to 31 (I left some people who I haven’t heard from for a long time, but they were there for me in the past and I genuinely hope they will come back one day). And I feel much better about it.

That is all I had to say. I will see you, guys, tomorrow for chapter 5.3!

  1. I did this a while back as well – especially for the people who seem like they just follow to get likes. They’re not much better than spam bots in my mind. It’s a little hard to discern who are and aren’t “real” followers, and I should probably do another round at some point again.
Anyway, I’m really glad to follow you and read your stuff 🙂

    1. Yes, I am not alone! I hoped people would not think I’m crazy for making my small ‘fanbase’ even smaller. I agree with you on these people. I only follow when I want to read the blog, not under any other circumstances. It’s the quality, not the quantity that matters. I don’t want this number to be fake.
I am really glad to follow and read your delightful writing, too. Thank you for being there ❤

      1. I definitely understand. Those strange followers – especially the ones that look like ads – annoy me a little. I think many of them follow only to make me go look at and potentially follow my blog. I tend to stick only with following Sims stuff, though, so I just don’t follow back.
Thank you for being here, too, Jowita 🙂 ❤

  2. I totally understand how you feel! I want to do it too but I’m scared I might remove someone who is silently reading my story. The number of followers who are obviously not Sim related (like just some marketing) bothers me though, so perhaps I will follow your lead.
I am happy to call you and everyone else I talk to here friends! It’s really great to just know so many nice people with the same passions ❤️

    1. Oh, you understand, too!
Well, I was thinking the same thing, but honestly if someone has been reading your story for a long time and has not bothered to like or comment on a single post, are they really an engaged reader? Consider this, they maybe want to stay anonymous, but why would they leave their e-mail address there or even have a WordPress account – if they do have a WordPress account it is possible for them to leave a like and absolutely no trouble at all. And they may have your story bookmarked anyway and check in when you post something new, not necessarily checking their Reader or mail. That’s my way of thinking anyway.
It had been bothering me for a long time, too, because it is not the real number of people who read. And if you feel uncertain, you may just remove the people you are sure have nothing to do with your story. Also the thing with yours is a bit different since you’ve been gone for a long time and some of them might have abandoned your story, thinking you’d not come back.
I am very glad to call you and so many others friends. It’s an amazing community we have here, so drama-free and respectful to everyone’s creativity. I have been a part of other internet communities before and ours really is a special one.

      1. You’ve got very good points there, thanks for the advice! I’ve actually done that on my Facebook friends list before, because I really didn’t like my high school and wanted to cut off all ties with it (except for my good friends), so I don’t know why I’m hesitant to do it here. As bad as it sounds, it felt satisfying to prune out the people I didn’t actually like LOL. Well, now I’m going to go clean up my followers list 😀

      2. I have thought this through, I’ve been meaning to do it for a long time and I wanted to be sure I did the right thing and not because I felt like it at the moment and it came out of nowhere and then I’d regret it. I *try* to be more mature than that.
You made me realize how many weird people I have on my FB list. I don’t care, though, cause I only use it for Messenger. I get you on the school peers. They can get really nasty!
I know the feeling, it’s super satisfying!
        Good luck, then 🙂

  3. I completely understand why you cleared up your list. It would be a bit annoying having these ghost followers that probably didn’t really read anything and just followed for some unknown reason.
It’s great to know that you think of me as a friend, although I’m not particularly active with reading your story! I can happily call you as a friend too 😊

    1. Yes, it was a relief for sure.
Of course! See, you read my non-story posts and you said you would catch up and have caught up a great deal already. I don’t press you, but if you said you would, I won’t cross you out either. Why would I? And you’re very nice.

  4. I’m your friend on the Sims3 Page for a couple of years now and I’m following, because I like your story, the characters and how you increased your abilities. On “my page” I clean my friendslist from time to time too. And I’ve become picky in accepting friends requests, because I got tired from recommending tons of socks, clothes or something else and never saw a comment or even a like below my posts. I can do better things with my time. And with the friends, who are dear to me over years. 🙂 Waiting for the next chapter.

  5. I totally agree with everything you’ve said~ It’s annoying to have people whom have no relation, interest or reason for being on your site follow you just to potentially gain something in return. I think weeding out people you don’t really want to associate with not only on here, but on other social media sites is a good thing – a friend cleanse, lol. I do find myself guilty of following sites I plan on returning to at a later time, haha so I’ll be sure to let them know I’ll be coming in the near future incase they decide to do what you did and weed me out XD I love being apart of this community and also consider you a friend ❤ 😀 I'm looking forward to tomorrow's chapter~

    1. I am glad you understand!
It is definitely frustrating and it feels like I did the right thing here 🙂
I think that it’s good to clean your friendslist from time to time. And to me, followers are practically no different than friends.
Ha, ha, no worries. Myself I got rid of the people who have been following my site for good two years for example and never started reading, so… I love being a part of this community, too. I hope you enjoy the new chapter! 🙂

  6. This is such a good idea. I have been getting some followers recently who had nothing to do with sims….I should remove them! I honestly didn’t know you could.

  7. You were so right to do that! I’ve only done it once with fb, but I should do it here too – although like you said, my small followers number will only get smaller, lol!
I’m the same as you, although I also follow blogs which I intend to catch up on soon – in case I can’t find them later 🙂
Of course I consider everyone I talk to here as a friend and I’m so glad there are so many people here who think the same way! 😀 ❤

    1. I’m glad everyone is understanding and didn’t think I was a crazy weirdo to have decided to do that, lol. Ha, ha, yup, but this number is nothing but a number and since the people I removed didn’t read anyway, things do not change much once they’re removed.
I understand, but some of the people I deleted are those who followed my blog right when I started and haven’t liked or comment on a single post since then, so I can’t imagine how they would want to catch up. They followed almost two years ago!
I consider you a friend, too. It is great to have such a supportive community here 🙂 ♥

    2. As for the blogs you want to catch up on in the future – you may just bookmark them. I figured if I follow them too early, my Reader can sometimes be filled with stuff I don’t read anyway and find confusing because I am not caught up and don’t know what’s going on, lol!

      1. Lol, now that you’ve mentioned it, I remember having this result when I first started – so I unfollowed quite a few of them! I honestly had forgotten about that! I should do another clearance soon, lol!

  8. You unfollowed nearly 50 users. A lot of people were on your follow list for no particular reason. I think you made a good decision. I understand your action. You prefer to have more friends rather than have the followers which are invisible here. I’m thinking positive and I’m convinced that a real, new fans will appear on your blog pretty soon 😉

  9. I don’t think you are alone in this thinking. I’ve cleared several lists for exactly this same reason. Lately, I have been following people back, some I know I will never keep up on their site. Those people are mostly non Sim playing bloggers and so I know I may pop in now and again to be polite, but I’m probably not interested. Others I know I won’t visit at all.
I guess it’s how you view the “game”. For example, the most popular kid in the lower grades is usually the parents who are most involved, provide the parties, enroll their kids in sports and are around other parents….it’s a the “parent game” and I refused to play. Which is bad in a very small village and definitely impacted the bullying my daughter received for 3 years. In the blogging world, we do things to further the “notice” of our stories, that perhaps we are slightly uncomfortable with or goes against what we had hoped for in the beginning. But to be noticed, you have to get your name out there as much as possible. ‘We post on social medias, push push push. However, if a writer is happy just getting the story out for a small handful of people who will love it and follow every post, then good for them! That’s me by the way. I follow back to be polite. It’s the Canadian way.

    1. Most of the people who do non-Sim stuff don’t give a hang about your blog, so that’s why I cleared my list off of them. I do not follow people who I know I won’t be reading. Sort of my policy.
I am not and will never be desperate enough to follow people for a follow-back. As Louise mentioned, such people are no worse than bots. If they want to get to know me and for me to give them a follow then they should at least write one comment and not just leave a follow and never come back to check out anything.
I am very happy with having a small fanbase, for me it’s more than enough. I write to write and for myself, not purely for others. When I started this blog I thought there was no way anyone would be reading anyway.

  10. I also forgot to say, that I take account for people who are busy in school and can only follow along when school is out. Or their computer broke and they are trying to save up for a new one. Or, they are caring for a sick parent and have no time for computer things. Or, are sick themselves. Once readers who get behind or stop reading or following along with me on social media, could have all kinds of reasons why. It’s a tough call when you think of it that way. Do I delete them? Do I not and give them more time?
However people that have never checked out your site is totally different. That I get for sure.

  11. I can only relate this to community, my list here is to small here, but this is why I try and keep my friend list small on the community to, I’m not very good at keeping up with all of them, but I really try with my bff`s there, I wish I was better at it, I also clear the list there every now and again, if they never talked, but I feel bad when I do, I think maybe if tried a little harder, but like what you say, its better to have a small list and quality friends, then 1,000s of people that are there just to boost you`re ego, I cant really understand this, I couldn’t handle that, so I understand were you are coming from, Jowita 🙂

  12. Thanks for keeping me on your list 🤗 it means a great deal to me. I too feel that the friends I have online should be, and are, people I would consider friends in “RL”. I would never expect a follow back (especially since I think my WP is just dabbler status lol) and I would not follow someone or something that did not interest me. I do, however, have a severe backlog of reading to do and I never seem to find the time! It was much simpler when I was studying and then unemployed 😂 Damn that job that pays for my food lol doesn’t it know I NEED Simlit time too!

Anyway, you know my rambling by now 😁 I just want to say that even if I’m not liking or commenting, please don’t think I’m not still along for the ride! Sometimes I’ve just barely got enough time to read and I’m trying to keep on top of all my favourites (of which you are definitely one).

    Happy Saturday 🤗

    1. Of course, I know you’ve done a lot of catching up and are around for the story even though you may not always have the time to be around as much as you would like. I don’t think everyone understood that the people I deleted are the ones who didn’t even say hi or liked a single post, and you’re definitely not among them. And I wouldn’t delete you even if you’re not around for a long time, because I know you actually care 😀 I myself don’t follow anyone until I’m caught up. This way it’s easier for me to manage my reader. I understand all of these and, as I said, I would never delete you. Thank you for complimenting me, it’s so sweet of you ♥

      1. Thanks 😁 I’m going to be having a bit more time to read from now on lol except the last week of the month (that’s when work gets horrendously hectic #PayrollAdminProblems) plus I’ve managed to get a nice data package on my phone so it’s freed me up a little 😁

  13. Trouble is everything social brings people who absolutely want you in your reader list just to make sure they are popular, that they got traffic. Almost all my new readers (rare are they) are non sims and I have to clean them.
Almost all my readers never read me back or except if I share something personal in the simlit community. That’s cruel. Alright I did my story for myself first.
The people who comes to visit me only visit the home page and left or see the first chapter. (the most interesting chapter of my story lol)

The simlit community is everybody on our side, this is one of the most personal , the most every man of themselves you can find out, even tumblr is better to connect with people. They always justify the I am sorry I don’t have any time to read you but that’s lie. That means your story is absolutely a shit but they keep you because you’re a chit-chatter. I got a life too outside the sims I like enjoying reading .

I am not beling to the sims 3 community official forum my game is crack but I am active in the sims 3 section of the sims official forum if you want to say hi
    My nickname is the same.

    1. That’s true, many people start reading your story, because they expect you to return the favor and start reading theirs. Sometimes they won’t even get past your first generation and forget about your story altogether. I also clean non Sims followers. It’s clear that they’re not interested in my content at all.
I’m sorry if you feel this way. I try to read everyone that reads me, sometimes it takes me a long time before I get around to doing it. I never follow anyone I don’t intend to really follow – meaning read and comment on their stuff. It’s pointless to me to see posts in my Reader that I know I won’t read. I read everything I have in my reader. I never follow a story before I’m fully caught up because I don’t want distractions in my reader. I always read in the right order. They most likely read your first chapter with the intention to catch up from the beginning.
The simlit is really nice. The people here are very kind. That’s rather okay to me if they don’t read my story back, if I like theirs, I will still read. My story is so dramatic and touches on several very serious topics. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, for sure. I don’t think that necessarily has to be a life. For some people real is very busy, I know a person here caring for her family and her sick mother, she isn’t always up to date. Also, sometimes your own story takes you so much time you just don’t find enough to follow others. As I’ve said, I don’t follow anyone I don’t read. I’m sorry if you feel people think your story is shit. I think that’s exaggerating. Even if they do, you should do your story mostly for yourself, even if there’s definitely pressure of getting many likes and follows. I don’t follow people I am not interested in following or can’t keep up with. Plus, I have trouble with regularly reading a normal book with many real life distractors, so that’s no wonder I have trouble finding the motivation to read through another blog, even if it’s crazy good.
I don’t use the forum, however you can always talk to me here.

      1. We got real life priorities and of course they are the first one to care, I also got a real life but I know where is my priorities, if I am too much RL busy I don’t play the sims I don’t write a story I am on hiatus. But I don’t follow people , to pretend to be active and never glance back at their stories I might follow , it’s acting selfish.
And the simlit community is selfiish most of them. Because they only cares of their stories and they log off.
So why following? And pretend other readers they are interesting in your story?
I am just bitten of these people . I rather meet honest people as you are.
That are excuses to me. I never said the simlit community people are not nice as people quite a contrary, this is probably the best humanity spoken.
But on the other hand, we can not prented we are a true community because we are all alone here.

Aww yes writting are eternal we have a lifetime to read , that’s not this that bothers me the most. I am also in late in a couple of stories.
